Into the Unknown — Tech Writing for Real

Well, tomorrow is the first of two interviews for technical writing jobs for me.  I’ve put together a writing sample, but I’m not too sure about it.  Since I likely won’t get any views on it tonight — and if I do it will be largely too late to do anything about it until after the interview anyway — I’ll post it tomorrow for folks to pick at.

I had a lot of good suggestions about doing a second one.  A couple of you suggested I take one of my software reviews to show them, and that’s a tremendous compliment.  Thank you both for your generous praise.  But, unfortunately, the kind of thing the interviewers want to see is more step-by-step instruction.  I cobbled together a process I had to document a while back from memory.  I can only hope the instructions are clear and the information isn’t too … I dunno.  Too much me trying to be a tech writer instead of just trying to communicate the information.

Anyway, wish me luck, y’all.  I won’t be available until tomorrow evening, which is the really, really crappy part of this: location.  I have to commute by train to get where I’m going, and it’s an hour and 15 give or take a couple minutes each way … on top travel to and from the train station and then walking to and from the final destination when I get to the end of the line.

So, until we see each other again, God bless, and if you’re the praying type, please pray for us.  We can sure use it.

  1. Thanks, Penfury and Sherri. I really appreciate the support. I thought it went well, but … my tech writing sample wasn’t really perused while I was there. I hope it has the right stuff. We’ll see what they say if/when I hear back.

Thanks again for being such great friends.

God bless you. We love you both.

  2. I wish I had seen this sooner – J put his sample up as a google doc and asked his tech writer friends for input he said that helped alot.. maybe for next go ’round..but I’m prayin for you and am sure you did well…

  3. Raquita — Yes, great idea! I’ll try that for next time. I should put them up anyway so I can get feedback from folks like J, who’ve been doing it a while. I also would like to develop more than one sample, so I can cover a spectrum.

The other thing I’m considering is making a page here, on my blog, of my samples and allowing folks to comment on them that way.

Thank you for praying for us — we’re really glad to have any and all we can get. We’re praying for all of you too.

    God bless!

Hey, what's up? Tell me whatcha think!
