So, on Saturday night we had to go out. On the way back, I decided to stop at our local Blockbuster store.
I think my wife and I have both mentioned how the local store is going to close soon, and so they’re liquidating their entire inventory. Everything must go. They’re selling their games, movies, furniture, fixtures, and if they’re not careful someone may make an offer on a couple of their employees. I mean, they might even be selling the carpet.
I had to turn the cashier down three times for signing up for their movies-on-demand, aren’t-we-just-like-Netflix offer. I don’t want a free movie, thank you. No, thank you… really. LOOK PUNK, I SAID NO, ALL RIGHT?! Jeez! Get a job at a used car lot, willya?
Anyway, when I finally convinced her I wasn’t interested, we ended up with a few great movies. Some were Blue Ray discs, others not. I try to make sure if the movie’s effects-heavy and recent, we get the BD if it’s available. On the flip side, if it’s a movie we love but there’s nothing notably spectacular visually in it, I get the regular, less expensive DVD version. Tonight, though, we got a few BDs for $6.99, and ended up with something like nine movies total. SCORE!
I’ll be sad to see the store close, but in the meanwhile I will build our personal library.

Good for you, getting a deal! I don’t buy very many movies because we usually don’t want to watch them more than once, but when I do buy it’s usually when I’m shopping for other things. Walmart or Family Dollar. I really love Netflix. If I want to watch something again, I can just put it back in the queue.
My main issue with Netflix is 1) The stupid “RETRIEVING” message I get twenty-nine times a movie, and 2) NOTHING IS VERY CURRENT. I had no idea! Blockbuster’s download thing is cool, but it’s also $2/movie and that starts to add up.
you have me thinking I should check out the nearest Blockbuster for deals. Mind you it might already have closed down.
I thought Onyx told me all the Canadian ones were gone, but check it out. Can’t hurt, right? 🙂
They’re on their way… When the US side announced they were going bankrupt, the Canadian side put out this big spiel saying “oh we’re in fine shape, we’ll be maintaining business as usual”… but it’s only a matter of time.
I figured. Oh well… you’ll get good movies cheap. 🙂

Our Blockbuster isn’t closing… yet. All in due time though. We aren’t really “let’s watch it again” type people, so a couple years ago we sold off all of our DVDs with the exception for a few classic must haves, and cartoons. Mind you, we do take a paw through the clearance bins when we’re out to Walmart and such for cheap kids movies so we can start building a nice stash. My brother was the type of kid who would watch a movie a hundred million times and still want to watch it again, and friends have recommended we start looking for children/family movies now so by the time they’re in that “let’s watch a movie” phase, or for rainy/stormy days, we have a few things to watch.

I get my BDs now at whatever store I find it in. I don’t look around for prices. Not worth the effort.
Wait until you have a SAHM wife and two kids. It’ll start to have a little perspective then. 😉

Well, I wouldn’t call it “mooching” — Fal and I had an agreement. She could’ve gone to school and stuff if she’d wanted, but she chose to be a full-time wife and mother, and I was very grateful for that. But hey — that’s us. To each their own. I see SHE’S sounded off on this too… heh. 🙂

Oh, man, I can’t even remember now. I know we got Changling with Angelina Jolie, and I think we bought Wall-E, Sherlock Holmes, Cloverfield, 9, An American Werewolf in London, and a few others. 🙂
We actually don’t buy too many…we have streaming Netflix on XBox, so that’s cool. We have bought a couple of Blu Ray movies, but like you, only ones that are visually compelling, otherwise, we get the normal dvd too. Of course, so far on Blu Ray we only have a couple of Pixar movies. Ah, the joys of having a 7 year old. LOL
Yeah, the animated films really highlight the difference with an HDTV, don’t they? 🙂
I get my DVD’s from zip.ca, Canada’s answer to Netflix. I like getting DVD’s mailed randomly off my list of 100+ titles; I never know what’s going to turn up in my mailbox. That pleases me more than the uber-control of download-and-watch-instantly.

I buy DVDs at Target. Once in a while at B&N. Otherwise, I’m a Netflix gal. I love being able to stream through Netflix. Actually since we got Netflix, I hardly buy any DVDs. Right now I really, really, really REALLY want to buy the box set of Twin Peaks because watching my friend’s copy isn’t enough. I want to own it. Why is that? Why do we get that feeling of–I-must-own-must-be-mine-mine-mine….
I don’t know why we get that, but I get it too. I had that with the Bourne movies and even topped it off with the video game. And I felt that way about Tim Burton’s Batman movies too.
But most of the time I’m happy to watch something once and let it go.
I remember them WAAAAAAY too long to need to see them often. I have to really love it to want to own it. Unless I’m getting a GREAT deal on them, of course. 😉
