Welcome to the Future

1984-sea-city-of-the-future Well, everyone, welcome back! Goodbye, holidays; hello, post-holiday blues.

Happens to me every year. Somehow I feel I missed the holidays no matter what’s going on. One day, I’ll be able to just set things aside, focus on appreciating them, and really enjoy them.

One day.

We did nothing for New Year this year, as is usual for us. future_city_downtownI don’t know if I’d do anything even if I could except maybe find some friends to celebrate with. I’m not a party guy.

What about you? What did you do for New Year’s eve? The comments are yours to sound off and let me know. I look forward to hearing about it, and once again, welcome to 2010 and I hope you’re all richly blessed this year.

  1. For a guy who also dislikes New Years, I did quite a bit. First off, I went to a party at Bob’s girlfriend’s friend’s apartment. I was told “WIGSF, you gotta wear a suit. The party is semi-formal.” I get there looking like $1500. Sure, that doesn’t sound like much. But dammit, that’s how much that suit cost me. And I looked good. But when I got there, I learned that semi-formal to that group of people means jeans and a t-shirt. The Wonder Twins also went to this party. They too were over-dressed because they dressed as they were told.
Us three over-dressed people left the party and went to a nearby steakhouse for dinner. Dinner was yummy.
After dinner, I went to the party and my brother’s house. By the time I got there, it was a quarter past midnight. Sweet. I missed all that idiotic countdown mumbo-jumbo. I gotta tell ya though. You wanna see an empty highway, go for a drive at midnight on New Years. I was the only vehicle on the road. It was awesome. If it wasn’t for the falling snow, I could made awesome time getting from the city to my brother’s place.
At my bro’s place, we played Rock Band. I gave a couple people a drive home from the party because getting a cab woulda been impossible that night. I made it home by quarter to 2. At some point during the afternoon, I throw out my back again. I nearly wept putting my socks on that day and by the end of the night, I was so tired and so beaten down by my sore back that I could barely get out of my car.

I’m thinking, for New Years, start a new tradition, go out for steak. The steakhouse, fifteen minute wait for a table. Prices were standard. Then go home just before midnight so the drive is comfortable and traffic free.

In case you’re curious, 8 oz bacon-wrapped filet mignon, medium well with garlic and bacon mashed potatoes. Definitely the highlight of my New Years.

That sounds pretty friggin’ awesome to me. Except I like mine medium rare. 🙂 Happy New Year!

    • The highlight of your evening, that is because you blew off the party. You never got to meet Jay.

Speaking about 2010, it definitely sounds like the future when you say it like this “twenty-ten”.

The only problem with the future is, it keeps turning into the present. *Sigh*

  2. Read for a while, went to bed before 10:00 p.m. What a life!

Ah, but if you enjoyed the read and the rest … Happy New Year, Steve! 🙂

  3. I don’t feel let-down at all after the holidays. The promise of a new year and having the holidays behind me are like a shot of adrenaline. I LOVE January, even though I won’t be able to spend any time outside because of the cold. I know it’s colder where you are, but it’s only going to get up to 30 this week, and that’s too cold!

On NYE we played Guitar Hero and danced and all the kids stayed awake till 2010, first time all of them have made it. I have pictures, if I can just stop being too lazy to upload them.

Hope you get over your post holiday blahs soon!

Sounds like you all had fun. What else is there? 🙂 Happy New Year!

  4. I’m not a party person either. My husband and I watched all the episodes of Men of a Certain Age that had accumulated on the DVR and fell asleep before 11. I did wake up to the sound of revelry at midnight, though.

Well, I’ve not heard of that show but I do love me some marathon TV show-watching. 🙂 Happy New Year, Linda!

  5. We haven’t gone out on New Year’s Eve in at least 10yrs. Too far away to Wichita and dealing with drunk drivers and I’m not paying for a hotel room that close to home. We aren’t party people either so you aren’t alone.

Our thing is to fix various (very bad for you) junk/snack foods like Chili Con Queso with a choice of veggie tray w/dip (of course!) and one round of some alcoholic beverage. Hubby crashed out by 10pm. WooHoo! Major party animals in this house….NOT!

Us, either! We don’t have trouble seeing in the new year, but only because we tend toward nocturnal anyway. 🙂 Happy New Year, Delaney!

  6. I think I was asleep by 9:30, lol. A friend texted at midnight to tell me happy New Year then back to sleep. :-)I’m kind of excited for a new year to begin. I wonder what it holds…

As always, Jaymie, time will show! 🙂 Happy New Year!

  7. I would love to share some happiness with you, but sadly I know the holiday blues all too well this year. Spent the whole weekend home alone. The new roomies were in and out all weekend. Everything’s still crazy and a little odd with the divorce. It won’t be final until Feb. 5th, kinda feel like I am in some sort of limbo. Got some writing done, but even that didn’t distract me for long.

Hey the good news is we all survived and are into a new year. That’s gotta be something right?

In my experience, Beth, the new year looks and feels suspiciously like the old. Only the arbitrary numbers on the calendar change. I’m sorry it was a tough time for you. Praying for strength to see it through. Happy New Year.

  8. I was trying to set up my new cooking blog but the intermitant snow kept giving me intermitant internet usage . . . it was terribly slow and frustrating, not to mention extremely cold in my office which is the back of the house and furthest from the heat source.
No party animals here either. I think everyone (myself, significant other, dog, cat, and seven mice)was sound asleep by 10 PM.
DAMN . . . I should have gone out for booze and more Chinese food. Oh well, I didn’t really need the calories anyway.
    Happy New Year, Darc!

Happy New Year to you too, Louise! 🙂

  9. Oh yeah, speaking of this whole “it’s the future” thing. Where the hell are my flying cars? I was promised a flying car dammit! Look at the world we live in today. Air travel is less and less efficient yet more and more expensive. Looks like we’re moving away from the flying car. That makes me very angry!

Look how wrong “visionaries” like Arthur C. Clarke and Walt Disney were! We’re NEVER going to have a flying car, dude. Levitation isn’t energy-efficient enough to make it worthwhile, and free-roaming levitation isn’t possible right now. You should see the scientific hoops people jump through trying to explain “UFOs” and “flying saucer” type things. It’s hysterical.

On the other hand, you carry more computing power on your hip in your cell phone than the entire Apollo space program had when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. So there IS progress. 🙂

    • Did you know technology is actually going backwards in Toronto? There used to be this one subway station with a long Jetsons moving sidewalk. They tore it up and replaced it with a standard tiled floor. Tiled floors have been around for thousands of years. The Romans had tiled floors. This is the year 2010 and I can’t even get a Jetsons moving sidewalk.

The moving sidewalks are probably too costly to maintain when they break. They still have them in some airports though. 🙂

  10. This place is cool,
    funny faces,
    fantastic photo shots,
    friendly
    and
    FUN!

    happy 2010.

Thanks, Jingle, the same to you! 🙂

  11. My husband and I watched Blazing Saddles. We’re boring. Even if I were single, I’m not a party girl anyway. My idea of a party usually involves sports or games and some really good snacks…& maybe one alcoholic drink if happen to be feelin’ it. Happy New Year.

Me too! I loved watching so many bowl games this year, even though I don’t follow college football. My son even sat through most of a basketball game. Good snacks are okay by me ANY time, but especially during celebration times like the holidays. Happy New Year, Courtney!

  12. Why do you feel as though you’ve missed the holidays each year? 😦

We kept it quiet this year, Christmas was so busy, and crazy, we just had no interest in doing anything for New Years. We watched the Canada vs. US World Juniors game, which was a joke, and then played video games all night. I leveled like crazy in Chrono Trigger! 🙂

If you’d asked me at 19 if my New Years when I turned 23 would have consisted of staying in, hockey, and video games… I’d of laughed, taken a shot, and insisted you take one with me, because that’s the silliest thing I’d ever heard.

And I must say… it was so nice.

    I’m loving the quiet life.

  13. I know exactly what you mean about missing the holidays. Type A personality, anyone?

For you? ‘Cause, darlin’, I couldn’t BE any further from type-A. IS there a type-Z? 😉

We stayed in and my parents came for dinner. They left before 10 because I wouldn’t let them leave any later (amateur night on the roads of course) and I watched the ball drop with my girls. I haven’t been out in over 15 years and that’s perfectly okay with me. What’s better than watching your kids watching that ball, counting down? Nothing 😉 Happy New Year!

If only I could do that. Here in the Armpit of America, we have to watch the yokels do stupid, moronic things. And a bunch of dancing drunks. It’s a little like that drunken scene in Dumbo with pink elephants. 😦 But yeah, the kids seem okay with watching the ball drop. 🙂 Just have to remember to tune in an hour earlier.

  14. I did NOTHING on NYE. I fulfilled my plan to stay home and sleep. It was fabulous. Best Dog Otis gave me New Year’s kisses and considering what is out there, they were the best kisses of all.

  15. Happy New Year to you DarcKnyt! You always have interesting posts so I hope you don’t mind if I stop by now & then.

Now that you mention it, I get that feeling of having missed out on the holidays too.

After beef stew and homemade bread, our group had a big bonfire in the snow in our backyard, drank mulled apple cider with fancy chocolates and cheese. We performed skits, played alphabet games (each person sing a song that starts with A! Or, name a food, a famous person!) which may sound simple but gets desperately silly by the time the last person is thinking of any remaining … while shelling peanuts and throwing snowballs at the kids. The snow turned into sleet around 11 so we went in and warmed up while channel surfing. We hit the hay by 12:30.

    Best wishes.
